Georgia County Government - October 2008 - (Page 31) assisting with “what-if ” scenarios to project impacts of potential changes. VALOR has been recognized nationally for its developments in crime analysis techniques using geographic information systems and plays a key role in the professional accreditation of the local police department. On the other end of the spectrum, analysis of mosquito habitats, trappings, and environmental conditions is helping the county to manage treatment of mosquitoes that are known to transmit West Nile and Eastern Equine Encephalitis. Through targeted treatments of areas identified with GIS (instead of a blanket approach), the county is saving fuel and materials and getting better results than years before. These successes in Lowndes County are echoed across the entire SGRDC region and across the state in some cases. A local Board of Education has utilized SGRDC and GIS to derive new school districts and map out each of the boards campuses down to the floor plan level. The utilization of GIS technology has clearly taken root in South Georgia and continues to produce benefits to counties. This assists with emergency response to these campuses as well as with the management of the infrastructure such as sprinkler systems, video cameras, water and sewer utilities and everything else involved in running a school campus. All counties in the SGRDC region have benefitted from GIS investments in parcel mapping where they are able to perform more equitable assessments. The list of GIS applications of SGRDC’s even extends into the world of state environmental inspectors of septic systems. Through the Well and Septic Tank Referencing and Online Mapping (WelSTROM) project funding from DNR, a soon-to-be –released Web site will allow public health inspectors to enter inspection details for every septic system installation and well permit across 10 South Georgia Counties and see that data in tabular and map form with nothing more than an Internet connection. The value of this data is obvious with water issues abounding at state levels and this WelSTROM project is a first of its kind. Not to mention, it streamlines the work of inspectors and provides valuable resources for them to help protect and manage the health of our groundwater. The utilization of GIS technology has clearly taken root in South Georgia and continues to produce benefits to counties, and it’s the cooperative efforts of these counties and SGRDC that produce these high-impact results. The shared GIS resources of all counties in the region continue to reduce GIS investment costs and produce quality results time and time again.
