Georgia County Government - October 2008 - (Page 36) AMENDMENTS continued from page 35 to participate in TADs, many redevelopment projects within TADs will be difficult, if not impossible, to accomplish. TADs have been used for many years in Georgia to pay for public infrastructure necessary to revitalize areas of blight and environmental contamination. One of the best known examples is the redevelopment of the former Atlantic Steel Mill Brownfield Site into a mixed use development called Atlantic Station that has won several national awards. Within a TAD, bonds are sold to pay for the needed infrastructure improvements then the new property taxes resulting from the redevelopment are used to pay off the bonds. Once the bonds have been repaid, the county cities and school receive the enhanced property tax revenues generated by the redevelopment. In fulfi lling our civic obligations, we all have a duty to be active, well-informed voters.
