Georgia County Government - November 2008 - (Page 23) companies, water industry leaders and water and sewer authorities.” The Future If there are any further avenues open for mutual cooperation in terms of planning or service delivery for the Floyd County and Rome community’s best future, elected leaders here are certain to find them, under the auspices of such an integrated working relationship, hinging on continually identifying more and better ways to serve the needs of those the county and the city officials are elected to serve – the local property taxpayers. Room for improvement in the nearterm is envisioned by boosting public safety and emergency management, offer Jennings and Poe. “We need better connections between these departments, in the form of an all-new 800 megahertz communications system that will operate countywide,” Jennings notes. Another pressing issue for Floyd County’s immediate future is that the county has “outgrown” its courthouse, Poe points out. “We are in the process of planning a new addition courthouse, Seeing opportunities for public outreach, the Floyd County Board of Commissioners conducts one county commission meeting per month at a public school, or public venue, and more recently, has included senior centers in outreach efforts. which will be SPLOST-funded. The expansion will accommodate the county’s needs through the next 20 years.” SPLOST referendums are likely to continue as successful here, having been approved successively since the 1980s, Poe asserts. The first Floyd County SPLOST was approved seven times by voters between 1984 and 2006. The county is relying on SPLOST 2006 funding now for an active slate of capital and road improvements until June 2009, when all proceeds will have been collected. As is no surprise, the lion’s share of SPLOST proceeds is allocated to building and maintaining roads. “Currently, we’re slating 52.4 percent of current SPLOST funds to road and street improvements and maintenance, with 29 percent for new capital projects like the work release center, 15 percent to public recreation, and 4 percent to fire station improvements and a related training facility,” Poe enumerates. “We believe the work release center, which will cost over $1.7 million, will help us keep the capacity at the jail low, and will be able to handle DUI offenders, probation violators and other minor criminals. The judge will determine who goes to the work relase center by indivudal case. Meanwhile, no FLOYD COUNTY continued on page 24 Richard B.
