Georgia County Government - November 2008 - (Page 24) FLOYD COUNTY continued from page 23 one has to lose their job or ability to support their family.” The county’s criminal justice information system is another special program officials are using with which to further consolidate all criminal justice departments into an integrated whole, an initiative that will continue. The county is also implementing a universal “document management system” to facilitate better stewardship of documents and make all available electronically to the public. As for the future of transportation improvements here, officials quip that “the community is still waiting” for a direct transportation route from I-75 into Rome courtesy of the Georgia Department of Transportation but realize that current political and economic realities do not bode well for such a route in the near term. Therefore, westbound U.S. Highway 411, accessible from I-75 via Highway 20 west, just north of Cartersville, will remain the corridor travelers will take to reach Rome and Floyd County, for the foreseeable future. The Rome-Floyd County Long Range Transportation Plan, under the auspices of the Rome-Floyd County Comprehensive Plan, is looking at prospects for an Overlay Zone along the major highways in Floyd County. A number of initiatives are also on the drawing board to offset the community’s growing smog dilemma, which it shares with the northwest Georgia region within an easy drive of northwest metro Atlanta. Initiatives include plans to switch local government fleets to hybrid vehicles and putting transportation alternatives on the fast-track. Like neighboring Bartow to the east, the county’s metropolitan statistical area long avoided inclusion in the northwest metro region’s U.S. EPA ozone non-attainment area, but was in recent years “engulfed” in the area, and therefore has been on board with state assistance to work with area industries to control industrial emissions, while developing solid plans to lessen driving and congestion and promote alternative transportation that does not create emissions that contribute to smog. It’s hard not to be impressed with what this community has accomplished – and exciting to contemplate future possibilities as officials continue to bring their “think tank” sensibilities to the table, welcoming the full input of the city and the citizens in all matters important to the citizens of Rome and Floyd County. This is, after all, local government “designed with the citizen in mind,” not just in name, but in all facets of operation. For this reason, above all else, Floyd County should enjoy the best of what the future holds for the scenic and prosperous region of northwest Georgia that surrounds it. ■ Searching for Bargains?
