Georgia County Government - November 2008 - (Page 28) COURTHOUSE continued from page 27 about 500 residents. By 1880, the city’s population had reached almost 2,000, and by 1910, almost 6,000. By then, it had several rail connections, and the city found itself the trading town for a vast mountainous area to the north, which with few exceptions would remain unconnected by rail. While trade flourished, industry made modest strides, and by the 1890s Gainesville could boast a 30,000-square-foot carriage factory, a large shoe factory producing more than 600 pairs a day, a foundry and a tannery. As early as 1880, the poultry industry upon which the region would come to rely was beginning to develop. Additionally, thanks to the railroads, the area was gaining a reputation as a resort with several large spas advertising cures for “rheumatism, blood poisoning, dyspepsia and all kidney troubles.” In 1888, the area around Gainesville boasted 12 hotels and 6 spas. In 1901, the first of Gainesville’s several textile mills, the enormous Pacolet Mill No. 4, was erected at New Holland. The 1873 arrival of The Atlanta and Richmond Air Line had triggered a period of steady growth for Gainesville. In stark contrast to most places in the Deep South, a few Georgia towns had been able to establish and maintain a healthy pattern of growth after the arrival of post-bellum rails. Although the modest progress in Gainesville was a long distance from the economic Elysiums promised by New South promoters, the pattern was is similar to many of the towns along the rails of The Western and Atlantic Railroad, where the vision of a New South had, at least in part, been made real. Alexander Bruce’s fine Second Empire Courthouse at Gainesville was a testament to that vision. ■ Engineering & Surveying, Inc 16 Southern Industrial Blvd. Suite 110 Rome, Georgia 30165 Office: 706.235.4143 Fax:706.235.4191 www.SouthernEandS.com Rome & Floyd County’ Premier s Engineering & surveying Company Providing Professional Services to All of Georgia *Civil Engineering *Land Development *Land Surveying *Land Planning 399897_Southern.indd 1 10/15/08 3:02:45 PM 28 347176_McCall.indd GOVERNMENT GEORGIA COUNTY 1 9/27/07 1:16:51 PM http://www.southernEandS.com http://www.mccallinc.com
