Georgia County Government - November 2008 - (Page 29) ExtensionNews ACCG and Extension Partner to Create ‘Fellows’ Program T By Jeff Christie, Liaison, ACCG/UGA Cooperative Extension he partnership between the Association County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG) and The University of Georgia (UGA) Cooperative Extension recently took another step in its development. The announcement of the ACCG/Extension Fellowship Program will broaden the reach of both organizations and help both to more effectively meet the needs of their respective clienteles. Joann Milam, a County Extension Family and Consumer Science Agent in Washington County, and Keith Mickler, a County Extension Agriculture and Natural Resources Agent in Floyd County, will serve one-year terms as ACCG Fellows while still carrying out their responsibilities as county agents. Both Milam and Mickler are recent graduates of the UGA Cooperative Extension Academy for Professional Excellence. For ACCG, the Fellowship Program brings access to additional Extension experience as policy development is being debated. Extension expertise at the subject matter level and years of experience working with people affected by local implementation of policy will increase ACCG’s ability to formulate effective policy that will positively impact people at the local level. UGA Cooperative Extension will become more active, programmatically, in the policy issues and initiatives with which ACCG is engaged. The selected Fellows who have been actively engaged in issue-based program development at the local level will an opportunity to participate in a significant out-of-county leadership development experience and also to learn more about the policy process. Their involvement in that process will both highlight and benefit Cooperative Extension programs all across the state. The Fellowship program has three goals: 1. Fellows will gain exposure to the policy development work done by ACCG 2. Fellows will help tie Extension resources to ACCG policy development 3. Fellows will participate in projects that will benefit policy development at the county level. Milam and Mickler will be present at numerous statewide ACCG and Extension events, including ACCG New Commissioner Training, Legislative Conference, and Annual Meeting. They will work with ACCG Liaison Jeff Christie to advance the level of cooperation in policy development between the two organizations. In addition, each Fellow will work with Christie to produce and submit a final project based on his/her experience. The project will be a written summary of the Fellow’s experience and will target a particular issue or set of issues the fellow has helped to shape and develop. Completed projects will be shared with the Extension organization and with ACCG. Extension expertise and years of experience working with people affected by local policy will increase ACCG’s formulation of effective policy. NOVEMBER 2008 www.accg.org 29 http://www.accg.org
