Milam, Washington County Extension Agent – ACCG Extension Fellow As a member of the Washington County Chronic Disease Consortium, Milam co-authored a grant for which the Consortium received a $350,000 Rural Health Outreach Grant to operate a multidisciplinary a martial arts fitness program for youth in Washington County. The grant included a nutrition segment. Milam wrote the curriculum and oversees this segment of the program. In her nine years with Cooperative Extension, she lists more than $1 million in combined funding secured and dollars saved by clients. Joann served as the 2006-2007 State President of the Georgia Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (GEAFCS). She has been recognized from the local level all the way to the national level for the outstanding programming efforts she leads. She was the 2007 recipient of the National Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (NEAFCS) Award for 4-H Afterschool Programming and the 2006 GEAFCS Distinguished Service Award. Her program was selected as a “Showcase of Excellence” to be presented at the NEAFCS national conference in Denver, Colo. Her presentations and exhibits have reached an audience of more than 110,000 people. One of Joann’s greatest strengths is her ability to effectively collaborate with organizations and individuals to get the job done. Nationally, she has partnered with major pharmaceutical companies to sponsor diabetes and other health-related programming and also with banking and insurance organizations to sponsor financial management programming. At the state level, she has worked with numerous organizations including the Centers for Disease Control, Council on Aging, Georgia Farm Bureau, Child Care Resource and Referral Lutheran Ministries of Georgia, and University of Georgia Colleges of Pharmacy and Family and Consumer Sciences. Locally, Milam is a member of the newly formed Archway Health Committee where she works with all aspects of health care in Washington County and surrounding areas to bring needed programming to local residents. She also works collaboratively with the schools, Family Connection, the Chamber of Commerce, and numerous other organizations. Washington County was the second county in the state to be tapped as a portal county in the University of Georgia Archway Partnership Project. Joann worked closely with Washington County Extension Coordinator Sidney Law to ensure that the community was well informed at all stages of the Archway implementation process. In her role, she works closely with the Archway Public Health Professional to assess and improve the community’s access to health care. Regarding her selection as one of the inaugural recipients of an ACCG Fellowship, Milam states, “I look forward to working actively with ACCG to bring our collective efforts together to benefit not only local county governments but also our Extension organization. As ACCG and UGA Cooperative Extension move forward, we want to be able to highlight our collaboration as an effective vehicle for positively impacting the lives of the people of Georgia.” W ith more than 20 years in public education as the first chapter in her professional career, Joann Milam has spent the past nine years writing the second chapter with The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension. As a County Extension Agent in Family and Consumer Sciences in Washington County, she has distinguished herself with outstanding issuebased programming, numerous awards, and several positions of leadership. Residents of Washington County and many neighboring counties have relied on Joann to deliver research-based educational programming in diabetes education. Local doctors refer clients to her so that they might learn how to not just control their diabetes, but to manage their condition and to live productive lives. According to Milam, “This has been a highly successful program. We have seen phenomenal results and the local medical community has been extremely supportive and complimentary.” Beside her work with diabetes, she has coordinated extensive programming related to obesity prevention, osteoporosis, cancer, nutrition education and financial education.
