Georgia County Government - November 2008 - (Page 7) President’sMessage Strategic Planning Process Lays Foundation for the Future Association County Commissioners of Georgia Officers serving through April 2009 President VIRGINIA GRAY Clayton County First Vice President JAN TANKERSLEY Bulloch County Second Vice President LAMAR PARIS Union County C By Virginia Gray President ounties have long since discovered the benefits, indeed the critical importance, of strategic planning for many facets of community improvements, from managing growth and transportation to economic development and capital improvements. Last year, under the leadership of Immediate Past President of ACCG, Houston County Commissioner Tom McMichael, the association began implementing its own Strategic Planning Process. This is a milestone for our organization, the purpose of which will be a “blueprint” for future direction. During my term as ACCG President I have, in concert with ACCG leadership, continued to pursue the strategic planning process McMichael initiated. The ACCG Executive Committee and your Board of Managers has actively embraced this process and completion of the initial plan draft will soon evolve into membership input and ultimately formal adoption of the plan at the ACCG Annual Meeting in 2009. ACCG’s Strategic Planning Committee members, appointed last year, represent the ACCG Executive Committee and members of the Board of Managers involved representing key regions of Georgia, and include 1st Vice President Jan Tankersley of Bulloch County; 2nd Vice President Lamar Paris of Union County; 3rd Vice President Melvin Davis of Oconee County; Ben Hill County Commissioner and past president O.D. Netter; Immediate Past President Tom McMichael; Dawson County Chairman Mike Berg; Cobb County Chairman Sam Olens; Athens-Clarke County Mayor Heidi Davison; Peach County Commissioner James Khoury; Bartow County Commissioner and past ACCG president Clarence Brown; Hall County Commissioner Deborah Mack; and Mitchell County Commissioner and past ACCG president Ben Hayward. Executive Director Jerry Griffin and Deputy Director Ross King also staff the committee, alongside Dr. Rob Williams of the J.W. Fanning Leadership Institute at The University of Georgia, our facilitator for this process. A basic assessment of the association has now been completed by Dr. Williams, based on PRESIDENT continued on page 8 Third Vice President G. MELVIN DAVIS Oconee County Executive Director JERRY R.
