Georgia County Government - December 2008 - (Page 15) Recognizing the state’s current fiscal woes and the need for budget cuts, ACCG will work to preserve funding for vital local government projects administered through the Georgia Environmental Facilities Authority (GEFA), t he state Env ironmenta l Protection Division (EPD) and the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA). While there are no stated plans at this writing for redirecting or otherwise tapping all or part of GEFA’s $250 million reserve (intended to be used for revolving loans to help local governments’ investment in environmental infrastructure) this is an issue that will be closely monitored, and opposed, by ACCG. A hot-button issue expected to be addressed is energy, Edwards adds. “Well-respected members of both the Georgia House and Senate have called for resolutions urging the federal government to adopt a comprehensive energy strategy to reduce America’s dependence on foreign oil, creating a strategic energy plan for Georgia, providing tax credits or other incentives for hybrid cars, energy-efficient appliances, bio fuel manufacturers, and the like.” Georgia’s legislative leaders are also looking into promoting location of an oil refinery in the state, reducing the amount of time it takes to build nuclear power facilities, and refining the state’s action plan for addressing gas shortages.
