Their homes were also impacted, their families displaced and their lives disrupted. The difference is, whether a commissioner, a mayor, a sheriff or a policeman, each had to deal with the aftermath of the disaster – often leaving their own families to dutifully serve the greater good of the community. To some it would be nice to be able to call on government only when they need something from it, to make their lives more comfortable. After all, if my house isn’t on fire, why do I need a fire department? Or, if I don’t feel threatened or crime has not come into my life, why do I need to spend so much on police? All this begs the question: if “someone” would only have government resources necessary when I needed them to make my life good, wouldn’t that be the most efficient thing? Unfortunately that is just not possible in the real world. There is no such thing as “instant government,” only to be summoned or called upon if needed. Instead, government is always there – always on call, and in fact, doing a host of things most people aren’t aware of but which facilitates daily life, from the ability to flush toilets and put trash out on the curb for pickup, to the emergency police car or ambulance that arrives when 911 is called. It’s time citizens got better acquainted with the comprehensive number of ways in which government does work – including its many capabilities, obvious or not – as well as its limitations. Under the lens of reasonable scrutiny, most people would conclude, if nothing else, that government is always there to help, and is no one’s enemy. ■ ß Surveying ß Data Collection ß Planning and Design ß Landscape Architecture ß Transportation Engineering ß Subsurface Utility Engineering www.streetsmarts.us | (770) 813-0882 8 GEORGIA COUNTY GOVERNMENT http://www.cdm.com http://www.surplusproperty.doas.ga.gov http://www.gbtengineers.com http://www.streetsmarts.us
