Georgia Civic Awareness Program for Students News
he Georgia Civic Awareness Program for Students (GCAPS) was developed by ACCG staff and county officials to address the need for increased civic involvement and awareness among our state’s youth. The program is designed to provide students with the opportunity to learn first-hand the roles and services that local governments fulfill and offer to all citizens in Georgia. In Oconee County, the GCAPS program kicked off its seventh year this fall, under the direction of Oconee
County Extension Agent of 4-H Youth Development, Lauren Healey. More than 100 youth have participated in the program since its inception. Thanks to a grant that ACCG received from the Verizon Foundation, Bibb and Rockdale counties launched the GCAPS program in their communities this fall.
In Bibb County, the program is led by Public Affairs Officer Kevin Barrere. In Rockdale County, County Extension Agent of 4-H Youth Development Brittany Johnson oversees the program. All youth participating in the program will visit the State Capitol in February to learn more about the state legislative process and meet state leaders. For more information on the GCAPS program, contact ACCG External Relations Director Kathleen Bowen at (404) 522-5022 or email@example.com.
GDOT Ready for Winter Weather
he Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) staff in metro Atlanta and the northern Georgia counties are prepared for this year’s winter weather roadway challenge – all snow/ice removal trucks, equipment and materials have been checked and coordination with the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) and local governments has begun.
Hundreds of GDOT employees are standing by, ready for round-the-clock, 12-hour work shifts as needed. To best ensure safety and mobility, work crews will focus on the first priority, the interstate system; second, multi-lane state routes; and third, two-lane state routes.
