At the Canadian Airports Council, we too are using technology to improve our own “customer” service—our customers being our members. The CAC will put the finishing touches on its new strategic plan, entitled “Reaching Beyond,” when our board of directors meets this month in Montréal. One of the initiatives in the plan is already underway. The Airport Link, launched to members in the fall, is our implementation of a software recently named the Best Community Platform by the InfoWorld Technology of the Year Awards. It is a webbased collaboration tool that is quickly becoming a primary tool in how CAC committees communicate internally and with other committees, in addition to serving as an archive for internal committee and association materials. The Link is divided into 10 main communities and several subcommunities designed to mirror CAC committee and subcommittee work. All active CAC members and participant members have their own username, ID and profi le, which they can edit. THE Airport Link is a web-based collaboration Content types include blogs in which CAC staff, committee chairs and particularly active members can discuss issues and developments of interest to other members of the community. Members also can post and edit documents, spreadsheets, presentations and other materials and can launch discussion threads on a wide range of topics and questions of concern to other members of their community. The Link is already well-used by most active CAC committees and CEOs. Key goals for 2008 include maximizing the effectiveness of The Link by increasing interactivity, usability and, in conjunction with the software developer, features. The CAC also will begin work to broaden use of The Link beyond CAC members. In conjunction with our partners at ACI-NA and ACI-World, this year we aim to explore how The Airport Link may be able to benefit the committee work at the regional and world ACI communities.
