G R A N D O P E N IN G Jacksonville’s Concourse A Up and Running JACKSON V ILLE IN T ER NAT IONA L A IR PORT ’S new, state-of-the-art Concourse A, featuring a 160-foot moving walkway, opened for terminating flights on May 6 and for outbound flights on May 7. “The opening of the new concourse marks an important milestone in the airport’s history,” said spokesman Michael Stewart. “It was in May 1968 when the current concourses were opened. Now, 40 years later to the month, the new concourse takes center stage.” Only the west side of the new facility will be operational until the old Concourse A is torn down and ramp construction is completed. By November 2008, both sides of Concourse A will be operational, and the west side of Concourse C will open. After old Concourse C is torn down and ramp construction is completed, both sides of Concourse C will be operational by early summer 2009. The concourses, which cost about $170 million, will service a total of 20 gates. Permanent art, which will be installed over the next year, will add color to the new facility. Gate areas contain HDTV screens and seating areas will have charging stations for electronic devices. The airport will provide free WiFi access throughout the terminal and concourses. Passengers will also enjoy more food and retail choices. Over 25,000 additional square feet of eateries and shopping options will open in the new concourses over the next year, including a new food court, Brooks Brothers, bookstores, and Insight (sunglasses and women’s accessories).
