Centerlines - September 2008 - (Page 57) E N V IR O N M E N T Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions The airport has implemented several programs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. For example, over the past five years, lighting retrofits have reduced energy consumption by 50 percent while increasing the amount of light by 300 percent. Under the Clean Taxi Program, all taxis licensed to load passengers at Sea-Tac Airport must use compressed natural gas (CNG). A fleet of approximately 37 CNG-fuelled shuttle vans reduce air emissions by more than 70 tons annually; 74 natural gas and hybrid vehicles save 9.5 tons of emissions annually. Several other airport-operated vehicles also use CNG. This summer the airport will receive a feasibility report about consolidating some of the local hotel courtesy vans. This could save 150,000 trips a year and about 1,000 tons of carbon dioxide. A consolidated rental car facility, due to open in 2011, will reduce congestion and pollution. A 40-space cell phone lot has reduced circling and idling; the airport wants to expand this program and also strengthen its “no The Airport/2006 Carbon Dioxide Emissions/66,491 tons Facilities 61.1% The Public/2006 Carbon Dioxide Emissions/373,033 tons Passenger vehicles 87% Airport/tenant employee commute 12% The Airlines/2006 Carbon Dioxide Emissions/4.2 million tons Aircraft below 3,000 ft 90.6% Pax vehicles 31.9% Airportowned vehicles 0.0% Ground support equipment 4.1% Hotel/parking shuttles 2.4% Taxi-idle 4.0% Ground access 0.2% Ground support equipment 1.0% Employee commute 0.4% Hotel and parking lot shuttles 1% Climbout 1.1% Takeoff 1.9% Approach 1.2% Fresh Solutions for Your Airport Location Why would a SUBWAY® restaurant be a good fit for your Airport? ➤ Portable meals for passengers and staff alike ➤ Strong international presence ➤ Healthy and nutritious menu items ➤ Great food options for all day-parts ➤ Convenience and excellent customer service ➤ Simple and flexible operation www.airport.subway.com Call Janet Bencivenga 1.800.888.4848 x1351 or +1.203.877.4281 x1351 e-mail: Bencivenga_j@subway.com SUBWAY® is a registered trademark of Doctor’s Associates Inc. ©2008 Doctor’s Associates Inc. 384085_SUBWAY.indd 1 www.aci-na.org | CENTERLINES 7/28/08 5:32:25 PM 57 http://www.subway.com http://www.aci-na.org
