Centerlines - January 2008 - (Page 22) REVENUE In the large airport convenience retail category, the Detroit Metropolitan Airport-Wayne County Airport Authority McNamara Terminal took first place honors. The plan there was to provide all of the travel necessities today’s air travelers demand. Well executed, locally themed stores such as DTW Press and www.news.gifts.detroit offer travelers a fun, interesting and distinctly Detroit shopping experience, while recognized brands such as CNN, CNBC, Everything ASAP and others provide world-class news and information. In 2001, convenience retail concessions per enplanement at Detroit totaled $1.23. In 2006, concessions per enplanement including specialty retail sales totaled $3.77, and overall concessions per enplanement topped out at $8.87—more than double the airport’s 2001 figure. Among medium airports in the convenience retail category, Southwest Florida International Airport took the top prize. The terminal has national brands such as CNBC News combined with local appeal via Book and Sanibel Bean, featuring a home-grown coffee blend and convenience items in a bookstore setting. Coastal News and Beaches Travelmart provides regional character. Every prime passenger traffic area offers at least one convenience retail option for passengers who want that lastminute munchie, magazine or beverage. Revenue per enplaned passenger has risen from $2.18 in 2005 to $2.55 in 2007. 2007 AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE IN AIRPORT CONCESSIONS Richard A.
