Centerlines - January 2008 - (Page 45) ON MANAGEMENT continued from page 38 comments or how often the floors are mopped. “As a credit agency,” said Forsgren, “we’re more narrowly focused on financial performance, so not only do we benchmark and look at how well is airport operator A performing relative to airport operator B, but in the scheme of things across all of the sectors that we rate, how does this performance compare financially to others? What it boils down to in the very end for us—although we look at so many different aspects to airports operations, both financially and operationally, legal structure and covenants—is our rating, which is a measure of the probability of a payment default—or more notably, will the airport pay its obligations on time and in full?” CONSTRUCTION & FACILITY DEVELOPMENT – PAVEMENT RESTORATION & REHABILITATION URS Corporation 6 CONSTRUCTION & FACILITY DEVELOPMENT – PROGRAM MANGEMENT URS Corporation 6 CONSULTING & MANAGEMENT – AIRLINES URS Corporation 6 CONSULTING & MANAGEMENT – AIRPORTS URS Corporation 6 CONSULTING & MANAGEMENT – ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERS & CONSULTANTS URS Corporation 6 CONSULTING & MANAGEMENT – FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT Infrastructure Management Group, Inc. 38 CONSULTING & MANAGEMENT – MASTER PLANNING URS Corporation 6 CONSULTING & MANAGEMENT – PASSENGER SERVICES Airport Consulting Incorporated 45 IT & COMMUNICATIONS – COMMUNICATIONS URS Corporation 6 IT & COMMUNICATIONS – FIBER OPTIC INFRASTRUCTURE URS Corporation 6 IT & COMMUNICATIONS – FLIGHT INFORMATION DISPLAY SYSTEMS URS Corporation 6 Getting consistent data is one of the challenges with the benchmarking process, said Poinsatte. “The trouble with benchmarking is you only get the information once a year, and it’s a year old,” he said. “We’re comparing our ’08 budget against ’06 actuals.” Benchmarking is not only an important tool for airports and FAA but also for rating agencies. According to Kurt Forsgren, managing director of Standard and Poor’s Corporate and Government Ratings, the benchmarks or comparative data ratings agencies usually focus on are the financial and operational data rather than management-oriented benchmarks, such as how well an airport responds to customer Credit agencies like Standard and Poor’s get their data from the financial operational data statistics they receive from airport operators, in addition to the generally available information about traffic trends and other outside sources of data. Forsgren agrees that one of the challenges of benchmarking is the different methods of collecting and reporting data at airports. “As much as it can be helpful to have benchmarking data,” said Forsgren, “the presumption behind it is that all the data from all the airports is the same, and you’re just comparing it. And I think what makes our job unique is we know that’s not always the case.” ■ IT & COMMUNICATIONS – TELECOMMUNICATION URS Corporation 6 PASSENGER TERMINAL CONCESSIONS – ADVERTISING SERVICES Alliance Airport Advertising 13 PASSENGER TERMINAL CONCESSIONS – DUTY FREE BAA USA, Inc OBC PASSENGER TERMINAL CONCESSIONS – FOOD & BEVERAGE BAA USA, Inc OBC PASSENGER TERMINAL CONCESSIONS – NEWS/GIFT Hudson Group IFC PASSENGER TERMINAL CONCESSIONS – PARKING URS Corporation 6 PASSENGER TERMINAL CONCESSIONS – SPECIALTY RETAIL HDS Retail North America IBC SECURITY – ACCESS CONTROLS URS Corporation 6 SECURITY – CHECKPOINT URS Corporation 6 SECURITY – EXPLOSIVES DETECTION SYSTEMS URS Corporation 6 SECURITY – FENCING URS Corporation 6 SECURITY – SURVEILLANCE URS Corporation 6 INDEX OF ADVERTISERS AIRPORTS Boston Logan International Airport 4 AIRSIDE SERVICES – AIRFIELD LIGHTING URS Corporation 6 AIRSIDE SERVICES – HANGARS URS Corporation 6 AIRSIDE SERVICES – NOISE CONTROL URS Corporation 6 AIRSIDE SERVICES – PAVEMENT MARKINGS URS Corporation 6 CONSTRUCTION & FACILITY DEVELOPMENT – AIRPORT FACILITY DEVELOPERS GMA Electrical Corporation 23 CONSTRUCTION & FACILITY DEVELOPMENT – ARCHITECTS & ENGINEERS Arora Engineers, Inc. 38 CH2M Hill, Inc. 26 PBS&J 12 URS Corporation 6 CONSTRUCTION & FACILITY DEVELOPMENT – BARRICADES Off The Wall, LLC – Multi-Barrier 28 CONSTRUCTION & FACILITY DEVELOPMENT – CONSTRUCTION Granite Construction Northeast Inc 40 CONSTRUCTION & FACILITY DEVELOPMENT – CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT URS Corporation 6 CONSTRUCTION & FACILITY DEVELOPMENT – DESIGN URS Corporation 6 Airport Consulting helps you create opportunities for sustainable innovation • Business Planning for innovative leasing, technology or new brand entrant programs • Developing strategies to increase total dollars in sales and rents Meaningful incentives tagged to volume, speed of access and more Investment to grow transaction volumes • Attracting and securing more qualified, high volume brand players Innovation doesn’t always have to be revolutionary or complicated to transform into intelligent successful initiatives.
