By Bryan St. Laurent 26 HR Pulse Spring 2008 Video interviews are probably more EEO compliant than human interviewers could ever be. A noted HR guru recently quoted corporate giant Jack Welch as saying, “If the rate of change outside your organization is faster than the rate of change inside your organization, your end is near.” Dr. John Sullivan then went on to suggest that the same thing applies to an HR department’s recruiting processes and strategies. In other words, if you don’t keep up, you lose. Given the rate of technology changes, the whole idea of “keeping up” means the topic of innovation is ever-present. “Innovation” suggests a surge ahead of the curve when, in practice, it often is simply the surge to keep up. Rather than periodically getting in front of the curve, it seems that the de facto approach to innovation for many organizations and industries is to budget how far behind they can let themselves go and still get the job done before the demand for innovation is so strong and the inefficiencies so great, that they have no choice but to move forward and catch up. The end result is that organizations often end up paying for an innovation twice—the first time with their inefficiencies and the second time when they actually invest in a new solution. Innovation in Hiring One area of potential immediate return for your recruiting and placement activities is in the way you screen and connect candidates with hiring managers. About three years ago, the penetration of broadband Internet access in the United States (and elsewhere), along with the miniaturization of camera technology, allowed the concept of online, structured video interviews of job seekers to become a reality. People have thought about the application of such technology for years. College career centers have used much more cumbersome camera and playback technology for mock interviews, and people have introduced themselves to potential employers via CDs and even the old VHS tape. But the ability to deliver the same type of content with the efficiencies of software opens up new and exciting possibilities.
