HR Pulse - Spring 2008 - (Page 36) >> 14. WHAT YOU ACCEPT IS WHAT YOU TEACH In the end, you never really manage employees, only their performance. They are managing themselves. person when positive change occurs, thereby reinforcing more of the same behavior. Be prepared to mete out negative consequences if the performance deficiency continues. Control over an employee is an illusion. You can’t make an employee do anything or force behavior change on him. All you can (and must) do is clearly communicate your expectations, make resources available to set the employee up for success, monitor and evaluate outcomes, and recognize success or mete out consequences for failure. Once an employee knows what is expected, either he has the will or the skill to perform as expected, or he doesn’t. In the end, you never really manage employees, only their performance. They are managing themselves. Finally, regardless of circumstances, never publicly blame or penalize the entire work unit for the negative behaviors of one or some of its members. Hold the individual accountable for her performance. Each employee is ultimately responsible for her own work and service ethic, intrinsic motivation, positive attitude, and constructive behaviors. n Address real obstacles to employee success. It is critical that you actively listen to an employee’s concerns if she identifies a system issue that is serving as an impediment to her success. The employee may blame a co-worker or claim that she is overworked or stressed out and is therefore not responsible for her conduct. Maintain your focus on how the employee chooses to react to job frustrations. Address the legitimate causes of employee negativity that are within your control. But an imperfect work environment does not justify unprofessional conduct. People have a right to their feelings, but they should be held accountable for constructive and collaborative behaviors regardless of circumstance. 36 HR Pulse Spring 2008 15.
