New Heights for HR Leaders Dear Colleagues, WHILE ALL OF THE ASHHRA HR Leader model competencies are vitally important, the two I will focus on the most during my term as your president are Business Knowledge and Personal Leadership. The theme you will hear from me all year is “New Heights for HR Leaders.” I chose this message because I believe that, as health care HR professionals, we need to move to a place where we are stronger business partners who create people strategies that support our organizations’ missions. We need to be health care executives first and HR experts second. Given today’s unprecedented economic uncertainties, it is more important than ever that we go beyond delivering great HR “stuff”—programs and services and processes—to deliver great value that bolsters the bottom line. The way we deliver value is by linking everything we do as HR practitioners to furthering patient care. While I believe we’ve made great progress as a profession in improving our business savvy, we need to keep pushing ourselves to understand not just the HR niche in health care but the industry as a whole. I challenge you to break out of your comfort zone—wherever that may be—to embrace new learning that will make you smarter about the business of health care. Read articles and books, attend conferences, participate in Webinars, talk with your peers, and be curious. We are all deeply pressed for time, I know, and it requires a time commitment to acquire knowledge. But that commitment is something you owe yourself so that you move along your career path, and it is something you owe your organization so that you deliver solutions that engage your workforce. ASHHRA is here to help you reach for new heights. You can add new skills to your tool kit and boost your knowledge by taking advantage of the products, services, educational programs, and networking opportunities the organization offers throughout the year. The board and staff are committed to delivering the things you need to be effective today and to anticipating your needs in the future. I look forward to moving onward and upward with you!
