HR Pulse - Fall 2007 - (Page 11) [HR LEADER] Lisa McDaniel T hese days, Lisa McDaniel is spending a lot of time talking about fish. No, not the kind that swim. The human resources administrator at Kittitas Valley Community Hospital (KVCH) has been rolling out the FISH! Philosophy® as part of an intensive training and development effort that has taken place over the last two years. This particular program was born at the famed Pike Street Market in Seattle, where fishmongers—despite working stinky, exhausting 12hour shifts—demonstrate highly positive attitudes and enjoy a healthy, vibrant culture. FISH! promotes four simple practices: • Be there for the customer • Be playful • Make their day • Choose your attitude The philosophy is the basis of a number of training programs being used in a wide range of work settings to create cultures of trust, accountability and innovation. Focus on Leadership McDaniel says the cultural transition that is currently taking place at KVCH is one of the achievements she is most proud of. Located in Ellensburg, Wash., approximately 100 miles east of Seattle, KVCH is a 50-bed Critical Access Hospital that employs 400 people. It all started with a leadership development effort built on concepts put forth in two books: Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap and Others Don’t by Jim Collins and Hardwiring Excellence: Purpose, Worthwhile Work, Making a Difference by Quint Studer. One of the first things KVCH did was establish a Code of Excellence by asking every department to brainstorm all that should be included in the code. When all the suggestions were in, employees voted, and the outcome was a code consisting of 14 points to live by. The organization also established on-going leadership 11 HR Pulse Fall 2007
