HR Pulse - Fall 2007 - (Page 12) [HR LEADER] to be a part of, and now I think we are definitely closer to that ‘great’ organization described in Good to Great. Certainly we still have our challenges, just like any other organization, but we’re right up there with the best.” A Born Teacher McDaniel started her work life coordinating educational programming for 3,500 students and a 70-member staff at Western Washington University. When she made the jump into a healthcare HR role, many of her skills were easily transferable to HR—teaching, counseling, listening, and trying to understand what would make meaningful differences in people’s lives. In addition to savoring the education-related duties of her job, particularly staff development and training, she also likes union negotiations. “Believe it or not,” says McDaniel, “I really enjoy taking something that is traditionally antagonistic and making it a positive thing. If you just draw a line in the sand, no one feels good. If you focus on fairness and respect, you can accomplish a lot.” Since becoming an HR professional, McDaniel has always kept her hand in academia. For the last seven years she’s served as an adjunct professor at two area colleges, teaching various HR-related courses. ASHHRA Involvement From 1999 to 2005, McDaniel served as vice president, president elect, and president of the Washington State Healthcare Human Resource Association. This year she was elected as the regional consultant for Region 9 as part of the new ASHHRA governance model. “Lisa has embraced her role with much passion and has truly embodied the ‘lead with your heart’ competency when working with her region’s chapter leaders,” says Lisa Schott, ASHHRA board member. “And she’s very adept at communicating with her region membership. In fact, we used her e-mail letter to her chapter leaders as the model for the other regional consultants to use.” Given her focus on training, it’s not surprising that, of all the reasons why McDaniel stays active in ASHHRA, she puts professional development at the top of the list. “Healthcare HR is different from general HR, and ASHHRA continues to provide opportunities that are specific to our profession,” she says. “I’m incredibly proud to be involved with ASHHRA and to be a regional consultant. I’m really looking forward to having more contact with leaders in other states and helping them develop their chapters.” n training—one full day every other month—and a one-day Service Excellence session that was rolled out to current employees and now takes the place of what McDaniel calls “boring, old-fashioned new employee orientation that tells people where the fire extinguishers are.” After McDaniel and some of her colleagues saw firsthand how Kadlec Hospital in Richland, Wash., had implemented the FISH! philosophy, she came away convinced that the principles were in line with what they were trying to accomplish at KVCH. “We decided to build our recognition and Service Excellence program around FISH! because it was simple, easy, and really made sense to us,” she says. Getting Results The HR-driven changes that have taken place under McDaniel’s watch are reaping both tangible and intangible results. In terms of numbers, KVCH has reduced its turnover from over 19 percent to 12 percent since she joined the organization in 2004, and employee satisfaction scores on the Gallop Q12 survey of employee engagement are up across the board. “I hear comments from staff all the time about how Code of Excellence and Service Excellence training is making a difference,” McDaniel says. “One of our long-term employees came to us and said, ‘I have been here 22 years, and this is the first training that really makes sense and has stuck.’ That says a lot.” She describes the change in atmosphere as extremely gratifying. “More employees are greeting each other with smiles and asking if others have a moment before just barging in. These are some of the most noticeable changes,” she says. “KVCH has always been a good organization 12 HR Pulse Fall 2007 “Lisa has embraced her role with much passion and has truly embodied the ‘lead with your heart’ competency when working with her region’s chapter leaders,” says Lisa Schott, ASHHRA board member.”
