HR Pulse - Fall 2007 - (Page 14) Spotlight on Comm MSHHRA Gives Students a Boost H 14 HR Pulse Fall 2007 igh school students across the state of Maine can make sure they’re ready for that all-important college or job interview, thanks to a community service project undertaken by the Maine Society for Healthcare Human Resources Administration (MSHHRA). “How to Succeed When You Go For An Interview” is a training module designed to help students learn the critical life skill of making a great first impression. It includes a video on DVD, lesson plans for teachers, and other resource materials, all of which are available online at www.mshhra.org. Simply taking on such a project would’ve been a big enough challenge, but the MSHHRA members decided that, since the program was intended for high school students, it should be created by high school students. So they teamed up with the students at Maine Central Institute (MCI) in Pittsfield to produce the interview skills video. Outreach with “HR Flavor” The idea was born several years ago when the chapter decided it wanted to take on a community service project with an “HR flavor,” explains Nicole Morin-Scribner, past president of MSHHRA. “As HR professionals, we’re often asked to go into the schools and talk to students about job interviews,” she says. “We wanted to find a creative way to meet that need and end up with a product that would have lasting value. And we wanted to do something that would have a statewide impact and spark interest in healthcare careers, even though the information in the DVD applies to jobs in any field.” Chapter members thought working with students to develop a video that focused on interviewing skills would be a “win-win-win” opportunity. The students who produced the video would gain valuable experience, the students who viewed the video would be better prepared to enter the work world, and businesses and hospitals would benefit from young people who were equipped to join the job market. According to Morin-Scribner, the chapter goals for the project were to: • Provide a community service • Gain recognition for the HR profession and for MSHHRA • Model collaboration between businesses and schools • Commit time and energy to building a prepared workforce for tomorrow. The “How to Succeed” video covers preparing for an interview and the best way to present yourself, both in terms of appearance and attitude. It features role playing of interview situations—both “wrong way” and “right way” examples—as well as tips from and a round table discussion by HR professionals. Morin-Scribner provides the oncamera opening and closing for the video. The accompanying curriculum materials include: • The Five-Step Interview Process • Career Development References for Staff • Sample Thank You Letter • Potential Interview Questions • Interview Evaluation Form • Healthcare Career Options • Interviewing Skills Lesson Plan • Interviewing Video Feedback Form. A Collaborative Effort MCI is an independent, co-educational college-preparatory boarding and day school serving grades nine through 12. It offers a comprehensive educational program and award-winning art, athletic, ballet, drama, and music programs continued on page 18 >> http://www.mshhra.org
