By starting with the year followed by the month and day, your periodically produced tables will always appear in chronological order. It also helps to use leading zeros in your dates. If you add dates in the traditional way (such as 1 1 2007), your files regarding the same subject will not list themselves automatically in chronological order when you open your directories. When saving correspondence received through e-mail, you may want to re-title the message when you save it. If you save your messages without a new title, you will have files saved with useless titles such as “Re: Your Question,” “Problem,” or “Help me.” Make it easy on yourself Even though it takes a little extra thought and effort on the front end, a consistent and logical system of naming your files and directories will pay big dividends for you later. n Alex Wade is Director of Compensation and Benefits for Yuma Regional Medical Center of Yuma, Arizona.
