HR Pulse - Winter 2008 - (Page 11) [EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S LETTER] Partners Make the Difference Dear Colleagues: As heath care HR leaders, you understand the importance of collaborative partnerships. You team up with clinical and administrative professionals to plan for the future, to solve the issues of the day, and to drive your organization toward success. Likewise, ASHHRA depends on its collaborative partners to provide you with education, tools, and resources, all in an effort to help you lead the transformation of health care HR in your organizations. One of the goals of the 2008-2010 ASHHRA Strategic Plan focuses on collaboration: ASHHRA will establish relationships with aligned external stakeholders to increase its influence on health care workforce issues, advance its strategic directions, and diversify its revenue. What I love about this very ambitious goal is that it commits us to making a difference beyond ourselves and beyond our own organizations. We can influence health care workforce policy on the national stage. We can change how health care leaders see our profession. We can conquer workforce shortage issues, quality and safety challenges, and health care disparities. But we can’t do it alone. We rely on the expertise and resources of our partners. ASHHRA has the good fortune of many lasting relationships throughout the years. We are grateful for the partnerships we’ve made and for those to come. As we look to the future, we invite new collaborators who can bring to our members innovative tools and resources. Regards, Cathy Sewell, CAE ASHHRA Executive Director Thank you, ASHHRA Business Partners! AARP—ASHHRA collaborated with AARP on a survey aimed at re-skilling and retraining older workers. Survey results were reported on the ASHHRA Web site in spring of 2007. A new survey will be available to members during the fourth quarter of 2008. AHA In Our Hands—ASHHRA leaders participate in ongoing discussions with Jim Bentley and Deb Stock of AHA who produced the original In Our Hands report and the subsequent publications. The ASHHRA Thought Leader Forum on workforce issues, under the leadership of Molly Seals, will provide additional input and recommendations on various HR-related workforce issues, including metrics to assist the CEO with organizational data. AHA Solutions continues to provide significant support and sponsorship of ASHHRA programs, such as the ASHHRA annual conference, the Healthcare HR Leadership Forum, and Chapter Leadership Conference. Most recently, ASHHRA collaborated with AHA Solutions on its new Healthcare Career Center. AHA Solutions and its Platform Partners support ASHHRA on a regional level as well, providing speakers and sponsorship for local events. AONE, ASHRM, and ASHHRA collaborated on the Cullen case in 2007. Leaders from all three organizations came together to draft guiding principles addressing the situation in the Cullen case. Bernard Hodes—In 2007 Bernard Hodes produced a survey relating to issues of the mature workforce. ASHHRA participants receive free copies of the report as well as a chance to win a gift certificate. Other collaborative efforts followed in 2008, including sponsorship of ASHHRA webinars. Integrated Healthcare Strategies—ASHHRA joined forces in 2008 with IH Strategies (formerly MSA Clark Consulting) to produce a compensation survey for 2008/2009. IRI Consultants—ASHHRA continues another long-standing relationship with IRI Consulting in producing the Semi-Annual Healthcare Labor Activity Report. In 2007, IRI and ASHHRA added the monthly Health Care Labor Report to their combined efforts. National Association Medical Staff Services (NAMSS)—The ASHHRA Board of Directors approved plans in April 2008 to collaborate with NAMSS. They are currently in the process of identifying opportunities and mutual goals. SHRM—ASHHRA has had a long-standing relationship (since 1996) with SHRM that grew out of the desire to offer joint membership. In 2008, ASHHRA entered into a new agreement with SHRM that will provide greater synergy between the two organizations. Watson Wyatt and ASHHRA partnered this year on a Strategic Rewards in the Health Care Industry study, providing reward practices data to ASHHRA members, who were also asked to participate in the survey process. 11 HR Pulse Winter 2008
