JOURNAL PROVIDES LESSONS FROM ACADEME/ IN AN EFFORT to present up-to-the minute research and information that ASID ICON readers can
apply to their practices, below are synopses of recent articles published in the Journal of Interior Design. Published on behalf of the Interior Design Educators Council, this publication features scholarly articles that cover interior design theory, research, education and practice. Exploring the Development of Cultural and Art Consciousness in Istanbul: A Study of Interior Design Students This study compares development of cultural and art consciousness in interior design students from three major universities in Istanbul, Turkey. Examining design preferences in relation to art and culture exposure, the study’s findings indicate that significant differences between cultural and art consciousness stem from three factors: participation in liberal arts courses in the K–12 curriculum, exposure to classical music and class standing. These factors appear influential in shaping the development of interior design students and should be emphasized beginning in the earliest grade levels, continuing through university studies.

Interior Design as an Academic Discipline in Germany In Germany, 16 institutions of higher education offer interior design programs. The majority of these are known as interior architecture due to the fact that the professional title is interior architect. The number of bachelor’s programs has remained constant over the last several decades, while the number of master’s programs—with specializations including lighting, furniture or exhibition design—have grown substantially since 2000. This paper examines Europe’s largest interior architecture program and describes the unique industry partnerships the program cultivates to enhance design thinking, experimentation, prototyping and applied perceptional research.
