Cymbolic NEW TOOL FOR DESIGNERS LINKS WORDS WITH COLOR/ HISTORICALLY, DESIGNERS HAVE used color as the ultimate tool to communicate feeling and mood and to trigger certain behaviors in the environments they create. Cymbolism.com is a new Web site that attempts to quantify the association between colors and words, thereby making it easier for designers to make the best color choices for desired emotional effects. Colors are believed to have very specific meanings, but these meanings may vary over time, place and culture. A project of Suffolk Software, Cymbolism.com tracks these associations over time—and plans to track these associations by user demographics in the future—to aid designers in creating environments that produce intended effects on the inhabitants. For more information, visit www.cymbolism.com or e-mail cymbolism@gmail.com. and principles is fast becoming an essential skill for designers and others in the built environment. “LEED AP” after a designer’s name indicates to other professionals and to clients that a designer has a level of competency and ability to create greener interior environments and inform clients about how to maintain more sustainable homes and businesses. To achieve this appellation, professionals must pass one of three examination tracks prescribed by the U.S. Green Building Council, including LEED NC (new construction), which is appropriate for most test takers; LEED EB (existing buildings), which is most applicable to building facilities and maintenance professionals; and LEED CI (commercial interiors), which is most applicable to interior designers. The Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI), a distinct entity that—with the support of the USGBC—now administers the LEED credentialing programs, recently announced plans to address some significant challenges to LEED designations, specifically the development of a mechanism to ensure that LEEP Accredited Professionals have up-to-date knowledge of green building practices; the creation of a tiered credentialing system to distinguish between practitioners with basic, advanced and extraordinary levels of knowledge; and the establishment a credentialing system that recognizes expertise in specific sub-sectors of sustainable design and building practices. To meet these challenges, GBCI is implementing the following new credentials in 2009: LEED Green Associate/ Individuals seeking only a few. Individuals who seek this credential must agree to a number of strict policies, including 30 hours of continuing education within a prescribed reporting period and specified work on a LEED project within a designated time period. LEED AP Fellow/ This class of professionals will be distinguished by their years of experience and by a peer review of their project portfolios. The GBCI is also preparing guidelines for active/inactive LEED AP status designations for which LEED accredited professionals will have a certain time period to opt in or out. For details about the new LEED designations, application fees and requirements, visit www.gbci.org. Preparing to Take a LEED Exam Although there are no prerequisites for taking the basic exam for LEED Accredited Professionals, the USGBC recommends that candidates have the following qualifications before registering for any of the three exams mentioned above: • Tenure in green building and construction industry knowledge • Familiarity with documentation process for LEED certified projects • Knowledge of LEED credit intents, requirements, submittals, technologies and strategies within your discipline • Practical experience working with multiple design disciplines • Understanding of life cycle costs and benefits of LEED • Familiarity with LEED resources and processes this appellation will agree to specific guidelines, including documentation of involvement in LEED projects, employment in a sustainable field of work or engagement in an education program in green building principles, and participation in 15 hours of continuing education related to green building principles. LEED AP/ This appellation signifies an extraor- dinary depth of knowledge in green building practices and specialization in a particular field such as commercial operations, neighborhood development, or commercial interiors, to name To view LEED exam policies, access study guides and register for the exam, visit www.gbci.org. A number of organizations unaffiliated with USGBC also provide study tools and practice exams for designers intent on joining the ranks of the nearly 60,000 LEED Accredited Professionals, as well as to firms with groups of employees interested in taking the exam.
