ASID Icon - January/February 2009 - (Page 39) ASID has been a leading voice for sustainable design for more than 20 years. It is only appropriate, therefore, that the Society’s magazine reflects those principles in its design. TWO YEARS AGO, at the request of the ASID Sustainable Design Council and the ASID ICON Advisory Council, we made several changes to the magazine to make it more environmentally friendly. We started using paper containing 10 percent recycled post-consumer fiber—an expensive but necessary step in the right direction. We switched to vegetable-based, low-VOC inks. And we removed the glossy coating from the cover, thereby eliminating an energy- and chemicalintensive process from print production. Last year, we substantially reduced the number of copies printed and mailed each issue by providing student members with a digital version of the magazine only. Making the magazine even greener has been a top priority during the ASID ICON redesign process. We upgraded the paper to a 30 percent recycled post-consumer fiber that is FSC-certified and produced using biogas technology. In addition, we will minimize the number of issues that are mailed in polybags, only using the plastic wrapping when necessary. (Those polybags are recyclable, by the way.) Our publisher, Naylor, LLC also has a corporate commitment to conserving natural resources and reducing waste. Their program includes recycling paper, chemicals, printing plates and press rags. They use fluorescent and compact fluorescent bulbs, as well as programmable thermostats in their facilities to conserve energy. Whenever possible, they employ electronic and digital communications to minimize the use of paper in the office. Recently, we learned that in taking these steps ASID ICON also is something of a leader in our industry. According to the Society of National Association Publications, while many associations use recycled paper and vegetable inks in some of their publications, few are considering making their magazines green because of the additional expense. We are pleased to make our contribution to the ASID tradition of environmental leadership.
