received a gift in the amount of $300,000 from the estate of David Barrett, FASID, to start the David Barrett Memorial Scholarship Fund. Barrett passed away on Dec. 8, 2008. After studying in Paris, Barrett began his sixdecade interior design career in New York City, practicing mainly residential design. Well-respected by peers and clients alike, Barrett lectured, appeared on television and was published in major design publications, including Spectacular Homes of Metro New York and House Beautiful. Famously, he purchased and redesigned design icon Elsie de Wolfe’s Manhattan townhouse.
“This is a wonderful gift for the foundation. ...As designers we understand the importance of supporting young talent and david’s generosity will have a big impact.”

“David believed he was a stakeholder in the ASID mission to encourage excellence in the practice of interior design,” states Steven Sonet, Esq., ASID Foundation Trustee. “He could think of no better way to support that mission than to provide scholarships to support highly motivated students seeking to excel and reach for creative achievement.” The first David Barrett Memorial Scholarship of $12,000 will be awarded in 2012 and will be open to undergraduate and graduate students attending an accredited college or university and majoring in interior design. The student’s work must demonstrate a continuing interest and demonstrated ability in utilizing classical designs and traditional materials. Detailed scholarship criteria will be announced in August 2011, with submissions due Dec. 1, 2011. “This is a wonderful gift for the Foundation and for the interior design industry,” says Penny Bonda, FASID, ASID Foundation chair. “There is immeasurable value in education, and as designers we understand the importance of supporting young talent. David’s generosity will have a big impact on the Foundation.” Barrett’s gift is a part of the Foundation’s Legacy Society, recognizing those individuals who have made a bequest or utilized another form of planned giving to provide lasting impact. Through these gifts, the Foundation is able to support interior design research and education, and raise awareness of the important role that interior design plays in our global community. i
