CHAPTER COMMUNITY SERVICE & INDUSTRY PARTNER MERIT AWARDS
Making a Difference
ASID CHAPTERS HONORED FOR OUTSTANDING VOLUNTEER EFFORTS/ AFTER CAREFUL REVIEW and discussion of the outstanding submissions
from chapters across the country, the ASID Chapter Support Team selected the ASID Ohio South/Kentucky Chapter as the winner of this year’s ASID Chapter Community Service Award. This award recognizes the significant role that designers undertake within their communities and the importance of the profession in a realm outside of the usual business sector. Since 2007, Columbus-area members of the Ohio South/Kentucky chapter have redesigned three townhomes in the New Horizons transitional housing program for formerly homeless women. Renovations on the third and final home were completed in 2009, thanks to the work of more than 100 volunteers who donated more than $180,000 worth of goods and services. The project was highlighted in January/February issue of ASID ICON. Two other chapters—Arizona North and California Los Angeles—were also recognized as finalists for their important work within their communities. Arizona North chapter members remodeled Phoenix’s Childhelp Keys Community Center (featured in the March/April issue of ASID ICON), transforming the center into a healthier, safer learning environment for children in the community. The California Los Angeles chapter was recognized for its work on the Ronald McDonald House of Los Angeles, including renovation of three community rooms within the house, enhancing the environment to create an inviting home for families in need. The ASID Chapter Community Service Award will be presented in June at the ASID National Conference at NeoCon in Chicago.
Denise Halley, Industry Partner Representative for Marble & Granite Works; Barbara Hulett, Industry Partner Representative for Solar-Tex, Allied Member ASID; and Mary Kay Dickinson, Allied Member ASID, were among the volunteers who participated in the chapter community outreach project.
Setting the Bar High
INDUSTRY MEMBER PROVIDES EXEMPLARY SERVICE TO ASID/ THE ANNUAL ASID Industry Partner Merit Award is the highest honor that the Society bestows on an Industry Partner
Representative. The award recognizes those representatives whose accomplishments are truly significant, including exemplary service to their ASID chapter and contributions to the profession as a whole. This year’s honoree, Bill Baker of Winfield Floor and Window Covering, Industry Partner of ASID, has made continued efforts toward bettering ASID through superior service and volunteerism on behalf of the profession and the Society. Baker has been an active Industry Partner Representative and role model for the ASID San Diego Chapter since he first joined Winfield Floor and Window Covering—which he now owns with his wife, Christine—a decade ago. His contributions and accomplishments on behalf of the Society include service to his chapter, leadership and representation of his fellow Industry Partner members, and dedication to cultivating the future of the profession—ASID student members. Baker served as the chapter’s director of finance from 2005 – 2007, while at the same time holding the post of Industry Partner Representative to the Board, a role which he again assumed in 2009. In 2006, Baker founded his chapter’s Sponsorship Committee and has since been instrumental in training chapter event chairs on the “how-to’s” of sponsorship, resulting in several highly successful chapter events. He has served on numerous committees and been the recipient of several chapter Presidential Citations. Among other activities, Baker hosts a monthly Industry Partner Roundtable for his chapter colleagues and is a frequent speaker to student groups. Further, Baker and his company are always the first to step up and sponsor chapter events. “Bill has been an outstanding Industry Partner Representative, supporting our board and chapter events,” says Nancy Jackson of the ASID California San Diego Chapter. “His initiative in forming the core of our sponsorship efforts has had a profound effect on the chapter’s bottom line and his energy is infectious!” ASID is pleased to commend Baker’s efforts through this prestigious award, which will be presented at the ASID National Conference at NeoCon in Chicago this June. i
