JOURNAL PROVIDES LESSONS FROM ACADEME/ IN AN EFFORT to present up-to-the minute research and information that ASID ICON readers can
apply to their practices, below are synopses of recent articles published in the Journal of Interior Design. Published on behalf of the Interior Design Educators Council, this publication features scholarly articles that cover interior design theory, research, education and practice. Gay Until Proven Straight: Exploring Perceptions of Male Interior Designers from Male Practitioner and Student Perspectives Given the small percentage of men studying interior design compared to those represented in the profession, researchers believe there is a need to study the largely unexamined issues of sexual identity and stereotyping in the interior design industry. This paper examines perceptions through a national survey revealing a range of viewpoints and stereotypes.

Political Decorating and Branding: A Historical Retrospective of the Oval Office Interiors from 1934 to 2010 The Oval Office of the White House represents one of the most well-known interiors in the world. This paper examines the Oval Office of 13 presidential administrations, spanning over three-quarters of a century. The study discusses the manner in which décor and politics create unique symbolic meaning from administration to administration using a branding typology proposed by the author.
