JOURNAL PROVIDES LESSONS FROM ACADEME/ IN AN EFFORT to present up-to-the minute research and information that ASID ICON readers can
apply to their practices, below are synopses of recent articles published in the Journal of Interior Design. Published on behalf of the Interior Design Educators Council, this publication features scholarly articles that cover interior design theory, research, education and practice. Outside the Ivory Tower: The Role of Healthcare Design Researchers in Practice A growing body of research in evidence-based design (EBD) demonstrates that elements of the physical environment correlate with health-related outcomes. With titles like “Director of Research,” healthcare design researchers are advancing the awareness and appropriate application of research findings, as well as contributing original, empirical studies to the field of EBD. Ultimately, the fate of inhouse researchers rests on their ability to add value to the firm—to spur innovative design solutions, to increase the firm’s credibility, and to help win work.

Valuing the Intuitive: Reintroducing Design into Interior Design Education Are we developing the right mix of traits in our design students? Cultivating the ideal design student means balancing the largely prescriptive, vocationally, skill-based criteria that act as a checklist of hirable traits and re-emphasizing the ability to think creatively and enhance visual awareness. This means placing more emphasis on the development of new models, questioning convention, and crafting an experience for the user. This also means exposing students to the breadth of creativity and the high level expectations of allied programs.
