With the direction of Stephanie Clemons, Ph.D., ASID, FIDEC, ASID submitted a letter of support concerning modifications to the Family and Consumer Sciences National Standards that relate to interior design curriculum at the secondary education level. The proposed revision was discussed and a decision was made to modify the National Standards for Family and Consumer Sciences Education as they relate to interior design. An eight-person committee has been tasked with drafting the revised curriculum. Clemons has been asked to fill one of these seats, important since most on the committee are not interior designers. The committee will seek feedback on the new standards from members of the interior design industry before they are finalized. Currently, the national standards related to interior design practice almost exclusively address residential interior design. ASID supported the suggestion that the National Standards be modified to reflect a more complete picture of interior design practice and to specifically include more standards that relate to commercial design. By including commercial design in the standards, students entering college would be more accurately exposed to the profession and would more clearly understand their choice of major. [For more information about the proposed standards, or to request a copy of the ASID-produced educational DVD “Careers in Interior Design,” please e-mail education@asid.org.] In October, Piotrowski will also release a fourth edition of her comprehensive business guide for designers, Professional Practice for Interior Designers. The reference guide, used by tens of thousands of professional and aspiring designers, covers the issues unique to the interior design profession in a clear and well-organized style. From establishing a practice to managing a project, the reader progresses through all aspects of the business, whether in a small or large firm. Published by Wiley & Sons. 784 pages. $80 hard cover. In November, Lauri Ward, Allied Member ASID, will release her latest book, Downsizing Your Home with Style: Living Well In a Smaller Space. The book—geared primarily to consumers—explores strategies for moving from a larger to a smaller living space and provides detailed information in the form of lists, tips, sidebars, photographs and anecdotal examples to create more storage and space. Published by Harper Collins. 464 pages. $25 hard cover. [To order these books, visit the ASID Book Center at www.asid.org/ bookcenter.
