ASID Develops Volunteer Leadership Skills at CLC 07 This summer’s CLC 07: The ASID Chapter Leadership Conference took place against an unforgettable backdrop, ideally located along Chicago’s Magnificent Mile. For three days in mid-July, ASID convened 478 chapter board members for a robust leadership development conference. These Society leaders— committed to practicing engaged, effective and ethical governance— gave of their time to gain a strong foundation for director effectiveness, including knowledge of roles and responsibilities, fiduciary stewardship, leadership acumen, strategic oversight issues and team building. The conference was excellent for many reasons, but especially because it was instrumental in engaging and motivating Society leaders around common goals. Program Partners for CLC 07 were ASID Industry Partner members American Clay, Cambria, CEDIA, DSA Publishing, Kimball Office, Modern Masters, Naylor Publications, The Palacio Piano Collection, Scandia Down, TOTO, Viking Range Corporation and Vista Window Film, whose generous contributions made the event possible. Highlights from CLC 07 include • Mark Levin, CAE, CSP, brought participants face-to-face with the new realities of getting members to step forward and lead. In his presentation, “The Gift of Leadership,” attendees learned to give the gift by design, using five important strategies for motivating volunteer leaders—and themselves. In his presentation, “Retention Wars,” Levin introduced attendees to 13 “rules” they can follow to enhance the retention rate of their members and supporters. Finally, he challenged the group to understand what motivates various generations and market segments in his discussion, The New Face of Membership. • ASID continues to evolve and refine the Society’s brand, in order to serve members in the most creative, efficient and effective ways possible. In his presentation, “ASID Brand Evolution,” the Society’s director of strategic marketing, Erik Hansen, unveiled a new brand gallery and offered participants a fuller understanding of what the “brand” really means, how it is visually represented and how it will evolve. • In an interactive keynote presentation, Janelle Brittain, MBA, CSP, shared the seven keys to “Developing a Powerful Volunteer Leadership Team.” The presentation was followed by a revealing, team-oriented session, “Improving Communications on the Board,” where Brittain helped board members identify their current, dominant communication style and how to flex their style to “speak the language” of others on their team. • In a hands-on workshop, “Be the Spokesperson the Media Wants,” Quinn McDonald of Quinn Creative helped participants identify what qualities make the difference between a great presentation and a forgettable one. McDonald then helped participants develop a tool kit to craft their messages for written or spoken communication. • RealWorld DesignWeek, a comprehensive program to educate future leaders of the industry through classroom education and mentorship experience, was introduced at CLC 07. The event’s national spokesperson, Matt Lorenz, Allied Member ASID— winner of Bravo’s “Top Design”—challenged the professional leaders in the room to commit to hosting one-day shadow experiences at their work locations during the week of October 19 – 25, 2008.
