ICON - The magazine of the American Society of Interior Designers - (Page 65) inside asid Getting to Know You Member: Edwin D’Valle, ASID D’Valle & Driver Associates 2006 Our Readers Find a Lot to Like Nearly 1,500 ASID members completed our ASID ICON reader survey in May 2007, with 90 percent of the respondents giving the magazine a rating of “good” or “very good” overall. Readers told us they mostly read ASID ICON to get news and information about the interior design industry, and they are especially interested in information about new products, new professional resources and emerging design and social trends. During the past year, they most often read articles about green design, safe and healthy homes, and the marketing of design services. When asked what they would like to see more of in the magazine, nearly 60 percent of the respondents said they would like more information about products, including new technologies, new features and more in-depth information. About 40 percent each said they would like more articles about the business of interior design and more case studies of design projects. Slightly more than a third indicated an interest in reading columns written by ASID designers and industry experts. (Multiple responses were allowed.) “I think that the high response rate [to the survey] is a great indicator of how much members value the magazine,” says Jennifer Lipner, editor of ASID ICON. “Getting feedback— both positive and negative—from our readers is invaluable as we plan future issues and the overall evolution of ASID ICON.” Results of the survey were shared with the magazine’s editorial advisory board and are being used to develop next year’s editorial calendar. Company: Member Since: Chapter: Florida South What motivated you to become a member of ASID? ASID is in touch with the world as it turns. It enhances one’s career and life objectives, and that is exciting. What do you consider the best benefits of being a member? The recognition and the knowledge that ASID will always be there to make my career stronger is definitely one of the best benefits. What have been some of your greatest challenges in establishing yourself as an interior designer? How have you overcome them? My biggest challenge was finding an interior designer or architect willing to open up 100 percent to teach me the business. I overcame it by going to small conferences, pursuing continuing education and working in the construction business to learn how a simple drawing can materialize into a living environment. What is the best business advice you would give an emerging designer? I strongly advise joining ASID! I believe that the earlier one integrates into it, from student to allied to professional member, the better and stronger, and more definite the career path becomes. Also, working with or getting acquainted with a licensed interior designer or architect to learn the business is of utmost importance. Which ASID platform issue, sustainability or universal design, do you reflect on the most during your daily work and living? They are equally important and I reflect on them both, including their major concern on codes and standards. What ’s on your bookshelf? Believe it or not, the ASID Code of Ethics, my most wanted product catalogs, tracing paper, lots of #2 pencils and a plaque I created that reads: Constant Improvement Culture of Accountability Innovation That Endures Service Ethic Winner’s Intensity In each issue of ASID ICON, we will feature a member of the society that you can “Get to Know.” If you, or another member you know, are someone we should get to know, log on to www.asid.org/memberprofile and download the member profile questions, fill them out and e-mail them back to memberprofile@asid.org.You might be the next member we feature!
