good to know REGREEN Residential Remodeling Program Announced ASID has partnered with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) to create REGREEN, a residential remodeling program based upon sustainable design principles. According to a 2005 ASID survey, six out of 10 U.S. homeowners say they would consider integrating sustainable design practices into a future home improvement project. In the last 10 years, nearly 30 million homes have undergone renovation and remodeling projects exceeding 10 percent of the total home value. With “green” topics on the cover of nearly every consumer publication and sustainable design as a long-standing platform issue for the Society, this project is central to the ASID mission of helping its members prepare to practice in a changing marketplace. Funded through a partnership of the ASID Foundation and the USGBC, the REGREEN program will include three major components. Best Practice Guidelines – These green residential renovations and interior remodeling guidelines, for use by building, design and construction professionals, will focus on the key practice areas and deﬁne performance-based objectives for sustainable residential renovation projects. The best practices will include detailed strategies for applying the guidelines and illustrative case studies and resource references. Learning Programs – The programs will support the use of the best practice guidelines and hasten the adoption of green practices by residential design professionals, contractors, suppliers and consumers. The courses will include both instructorled and Web-based offerings that cover key practice areas and complement industry practices. Resources – Both print and electronic resources will be created to reach residential design professionals, contractors, suppliers and consumers for both outreach and education purposes. Web-based resources and links will be accumulated and integrated into a consumerfocused Web site covering sustainable residential remodeling topics. This site will improve accessibility to key resources for homeowners looking to incorporate sustainable options into their next or current home improvement project. Similarly, Web resources will be developed and collected to support the needs of residential interior designers and service providers. Consumer- and industry-focused print materials will be created for use in in-store displays and distribution at learning programs, home shows and other targeted events. A preliminary draft of the guidelines document was presented at Greenbuild in Chicago this month and the ﬁnal version will be presented at INTERIORS 08 in New Orleans next March. Association delegates from the International Federation of Interior Architects/ Designers—of which ASID is a member—cast a ratiﬁcation vote at this year’s general assembly in Busan, South Korea.
