ICON - The magazine of the American Society of Interior Designers - (Page 30) Breathing Life Despite their challenges, historic restoration projects can be the most satisfying. BY JENNY S. REBHOLZ, ALLIED MEMBER ASID Passion and vision are key ingredients to any successful design career, but they reach a whole new level when it comes to commercial historic preservation projects. Designers who work in this particular niche on a regular basis, or those who have simply engaged in a few select client projects, all agree that the work offers a new perspective and a more critical eye to the design process. Despite the challenges and frustrations, designers agree that the ultimate reward is breathing new life into an old building and delivering a unique work environment to their clients. Nancy Hoff Barsotti, FASID, fell in love with this late Victorian building—used as a drugstore until 1989—in Pittsburgh’s South Side Historic Landmark District. The building’s tin ceiling and historicallyintact elements, large windows and great natural lighting, attracted Barsotti and make it ideal for interior design offices. For many of the designers who have found their careers focused on the historic preservation of commercial buildings, an emotional pull seems to be at the root of their willingness to take on this unique project type. “I fell in love with a circa 1900s building in Pittsburgh and bought it to house my business,” describes Nancy Hoff Barsotti, FASID, of Nancy Hoff Barsotti Interior Design. “I looked in the window and fell in love with the tin ceiling … the rest was history.” Other designers share similar sentiments: “I was bit by the historic preservation bug in college,” reflects BJ Miller, ASID, of Visions Design Group, Inc., in Tennessee. But no matter where their passion originated, designers in this field share a love for period architecture and decorative arts.
