inside asid ASID Announces Inaugural RealWorld DesignWeek Program RWDW one of several ASID initiatives planned for 2008 For the ﬁrst time ever, ASID is sponsoring a national initiative for student members next October—RealWorld DesignWeek. This comprehensive program focused on career development will offer both classroom and hands-on learning experiences to introduce students to the real world of interior design. The program is designed to educate future leaders of the industry and provide them with experiences that will help them embrace the professional practices, ethics and skill sets necessary to secure a prestigious and respected position in interior design. During RealWorld DesignWeek, Oct. 19 – 25, 2008, ASID student members nationwide will participate in one-day shadow experiences with ASID professional and allied members, as well as Industry Partner representatives. The week will be book-ended by a pair of online instructional seminars—Prepare and Position—hosted by guest speakers. Prepare will teach students speciﬁc professional practices to prime them for their shadowing experiences, such as business etiquette and interviewing techniques. Position will demonstrate how to put professional practices, ethics and skill sets into action and leverage participation in RealWorld DesignWeek to reach their desired career goals. The groundbreaking student program was announced this past July at CLC 07: The ASID Chapter Leadership Conference, by the program’s national spokesperson, Matt Lorenz, Allied Member ASID. “I’m honored to be a part of the RealWorld DesignWeek. Why not tap into that knowledge and use it to support and mentor students?” With a year to go before the event’s launch, ASID is already gearing up. Professional chapter leaders quickly responded to the announcement and many members have already committed to host one-day shadowing experiences at their work locations. “This program encourages relationships between interior design students and their role models in the industry. It’s bringing them together so that tomorrow’s designers can better prepare for their careers by learning from today’s pros,” said Lorenz. RealWorld DesignWeek is the Society’s ﬁrst cohesive, national program to educate future interior designers. This innovative effort has the potential to touch thousands of members and will empower students to succeed in the industry by building relationships with the design community and providing students with the tools to jump-start their careers. Participating students can expect to feel inspired and prepared for graduation and career options that lie beyond. At the same time, design professionals can build conﬁdence that the next generation of designers is primed to act responsibly and carry the industry to a higher level. Moreover, professional chapters will experience increased membership and improved relations between professionals and students. To make RealWorld DesignWeek a true success, ASID will need to recruit the participation of many members nationwide to host the one-day student shadow experiences. This is where the professional chapters can play a major role in the program’s success! All chapters should promote RealWorld DesignWeek to their members, with a primary focus on ASID ICON | THE MAGAZINE OF THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF INTERIOR DESIGNERS
