Generally, I am inspired by great song lyrics, a cool summer breeze, the hope of a beautiful sunrise, the serenity of the sunset at dusk and people who do marvelous work for others in need. When it comes to design, I am fascinated by fabrics— the pattern, texture and color—and the ability of each to emote a variety of feelings. What keeps you coming back as an ASID member? The same things that initially brought me to ASID: I want to stay apprised of what is happening in design and ASID is the best source! The regular updates on industry trends and information, CEU courses and the Designer Referral Service are all valuable benefits. I also really appreciate that ASID works to promote and defend the rights of designers. Do you have a design mentor? How has this person made a difference to your professional path? I have two design mentors.The ﬁrst is Arnold Levin, AIA, a guru of contract design and an authority on environmental behavior. He was one of my professors and later became a trusted advisor. Before I met him, I had very little interest in commercial design, but he revealed to me just how complex and rewarding it could be. My other mentor, Carol Lascaris, ASID, taught me about design and management of a design business. One of the most critical things I learned from her is that a client isn’t a client just for the length of a particular project, but should be viewed as a client for life. Which ASID platform issue, sustainability or universal design, do you reflect on the most during your daily work and living? Sustainable design is very close to my heart. My son was born with respiratory difﬁculties, so I have a heightened awareness of what we specify for the built environment. I feel that it is my responsibility to present the “green” options to my clients and I am currently partnering with a contractor who specializes in green construction.We have so many less harmful products at our disposable now and there seem to be new introductions weekly.
