It will create the great jobs and fortunes of the 21st century, and become a model—and exporter—to growing economies around the world. Most importantly, it will save the planet from the threatening catastrophe of global warming. And utilities have the chance to stand among the heroes of this revolution. Why are we so hopeful, even as the accelerating pace and disastrous consequences of climate change grow ever clearer? Because in the past two years, through researching our new book, Earth: The Sequel, we have had the chance to meet innovators across America, many now backed by hundreds of millions of dollars, who are inventing extraordinary new power-generating, energy management and carbon capture technologies. They are tapping the power of the sun and the waves, the heat of the earth, enzymes from the human brain. They are re-engineering yeasts and viruses to do their bidding. Some are even signing power purchase agreements with major utilities. Solar— Innovalight, based in California’s Silicon Valley, is developing thin, flexible photovoltaic film that promises to cut the cost of solar electricity by a factor of 10. While traditional solar cell makers wrangle for expensive, purified silicon, Conrad Burke, Innovalight’s CEO, and his team have made an end run around that supply chain, figuring out how to use unpurified silicon, the most abundant raw material on Earth. They have moved from batch processing to roll-to-roll manufacture, opening the way to cheap mass production. By dissolving nanoscale particles of silicon in ink, they can print their solar cells directly onto metal foil. They also achieve much higher efficiencies than crystalline solar cells. Innovalight is on track to be in commercial production by 2009. A rival company, Nanosolar, came to market this year with printed solar cells made of CIGS (a compound of copper, inPUBLIC POWER 24 OCTOBER 2008
