Public Power - January/February 2008 - (Page 54) In this spirit of community, APPA is proud to give our members an opportunity to give back to another community in need. On Friday, June 20, APPA will partner with the St. Bernard Project to sponsor the Public Power Day of Giving. When Hurricanes Katrina and Rita ravaged the Gulf Coast in 2005, arguably the area hardest hit by the floods was St. Bernard Parish. Before the storms, more than 65,000 people made their home in St. Bernard Parish. The flooding that occurred after the hurricanes rendered every single home —more than 27,000 houses—completely uninhabitable. More than 2 years later, only one- third of residents have been able to return, despite the fact that residences and businesses still remain uninhabitable. The vast majority of returned residents are still living in FEMA trailers or in attics that were above the water line. By participating in the Public Power Day of Giving, volunteers will help families in St. Bernard Parish to rebuild their houses, allowing them to move out of FEMA trailers and back into their home. By working side-by-side with the family, you will learn their story of survival, and what they love about their community while helping to rebuild it. Both experienced and inexperienced volunteers are encouraged to join; onsite training will be provided. Some of the activities volunteers may be asked to help with include: repairing/replacing roofs; installing doors and windows; installing insulation; hanging sheetrock/drywall; spackling; putting down flooring; installing trim and cabinets; yardwork; and painting. APPA invites everyone who is able to participate in the Public Power Day of Giving on June 20, 2008.
