The auditor used the AIRMaster+ tool for the analysis. Implementation of the auditor’s recommendations had a simple payback period of less than one year. Nucor Steel invited DOE auditors to perform an energy savings assessment at its steel plant in Norfolk, Neb. The plant, served by Nebraska Public Power District, is the oldest steel mill in the state. In operation since 1972, the plant produces carbon steel angles and rounds with steel produced from recycled scrap metal and processed in its electric arc furnace. Like J.M. Huber, Nucor Corp. has a strong commitment to the environment. In 2006, Nucor recycled 22 million tons of scrap metal, including metal from 9 million recycled cars. The steel mill’s energy bills in 2005 were $24.9 million for electricity and $11.0 million for gas. Most of the plant’s electricity consumption is associated with the electric arc furnace. Using the PHAST (Process Heating Assessment and Survey Tool) software, the auditor identified operational changes that would reduce electricity consumption by 147 million kWh a year. Once implemented, the changes reduced the mill’s annual energy bill by $4.4 million, a 13 percent reduction compared to 2005 energy expenses. ❚ Sandy Glatt is an energy specialist, U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, Industrial Technologies Program.
