APSP Quarterly - Spring 2008 - (Page 14) International Awa The focal point of the Roman-style pool is a colorful floor mosaic with real gold inlays and marbleized crystals embedded into its circular design. “Although we install mosaics on a daily basis, we have never before done anything of this magnitude. This mosaic was imported and cost over $50,000,” says Debra Nascimento, executive assistant at Aqua Pool and Spa. The 16,900-gallon capacity pool features a 3.5 foot-deep water spa at one end, separated from the main pool by a tiled break. The same tiles are used as accents along the walls of the pool. Water from a wall sconce fountain on one side of the mosaic flows into a trough before entering the pool. Steps are located at both ends and across from the fountain. This is a lap pool, shallow at one end, going to a six-foot depth in the center, and shallow again at the end. The lighted and heated pool is concrete with a pebble sina plaster interior and travertine coping. It includes a Pentair energy-efficient pump and fi lter system, which can save up to 40 percent in pool operating costs. Aqua Pool and Spa also installed an A&A in-floor cleaning system. To maximize the limited space available, the owners had a landscape architect design the pool and surrounding landscaping. Aqua Pool and Spa constructed both. The grassy terrace between the pool and the house is made from three-by-three-foot blocks of clay tiles. A trellis stands along one side of this terrace at the pool’s edge. Opposite the terrace, a raised wall planter made of colored concrete travels the entire length of the pool. Its small trees and f lowers provide a colorful counterpoint to the pool. “The tight access made this job challenging,” says Nascimento. “Working with the architect made the job better.” Building a House Around Water Glass mirrors water – and water mirrors glass – in the reflecting pool that received the Chairman’s Award in the residential water feature category. Aquascape of Petaluma, California, built the pool in Sonoma County, California. “The house is very modern, and it’s designed completely around the ref lecting pool,” says Todd Hendrickson, the company’s owner. The 300-foot-long pool, which is just six inches deep, is lined with black pebbles and features black granite edges, providing a mirror image of the home from every angle. The concrete reflecting pool flows 180 feet on one side of the house and 120 feet on the other. With the water in the pool at the same level as the house itself, it appears to actually travel through the home’s breakfast nook, but gutters at the windows’ edges carry off the overflow. “It’s not a true vanishing edge, but we worked very hard to give it 360695_Vynall.indd 1 14 | AQ A P S P Q UA R T E R LY 2/27/08 8:28:22 PM http://www.vynall.com
