PoolCorp CEO Manny Perez de la Mesa In the second installment of our four-part series on leadership, AQ turns its focus to the importance of inspiring a shared vision. APSP member and PoolCorp CEO, Manny Perez de la Mesa, demonstrates that at the very heart of leadership is the ability to communicate a future that constituents enthusiastically champion and work together to achieve. B Y M I C H A E L F I C K ES Aspiring leaders must create and communicate visions of the future. If they don’t, no one will follow them, according to research conducted by James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner while writing The Leadership Challenge. Their fi ndings illustrate the importance of the “vision thing” to effective leaders. “Just ask yourself,” they write, “would you voluntarily enlist in a movement or join an organization in which the leaders have no idea where they’re headed?” Leaders agree. “The leaders we interviewed echo the perspective that bringing meaning to life in the present by focusing on making life better in the long run is an essential ingredient in getting extraordinary things done,” continue Kouzes and Posner. A leading company in today’s pool and spa industry serves as an example of the extraordinary accomplishments that a clear, forward-looking vision can produce. In 1998, the Covington, Louisiana-based pool and spa distributor – Pool Corporation – generated revenues of $456 million.
