The award was presented at the CBP Recognition Dinner on November 27, 2007, in conjunction with the International Pool & Spa Expo in Orlando, Florida. The CBP of the Year Award is considered to be a lifetime achievement award and is presented to a pool builder who has earned the CBP Certified Building Professional® designation and whose accomplishments have made a major contribution to the pool industry profession. Nominees from across the United States were judged in multiple categories, including: achievements to advance the pool industry profession; compliance with industry standards in pool and spa design and construction; years of service with APSP; receipt of other awards and recognition for pool building accomplishments; educational endeavors for APSP; service to other professional and business organizations; involvement in government relations to advance the pool industry; involvement in community service activities; and other achievements of exemplary service. “After an in-depth nomination and judging process, the award was presented to Al Rizzo,” notes Joe Vassallo, CBP, chairman of the Builders Council Honors and Awards Committee. “Al has a long lineage with the industry. He was one of the founding fathers of the CBP program as well as educational programs established by APSP, and is therefore well deserving of this accolade, the inaugural CBP of the Year Award.” The 2007 CBP of the Year Award was sponsored by Structure Studios, a computer design firm specializing in 3-D presentations for the pool industry. A custom award sculpture and logo were commissioned for this prestigious award. Las Vegas glass artist Tony Milici sculpted an original glass art piece and creative design firm Bloomonus designed the official logo. 3 6 | AQ A P S P Q UA R T E R LY The CBP Recognition Dinner was sponsored by Jandy Pool Products to recognize the growing fraternity of CBPs within the industry. In the 1950s he began his own business, Albert Rizzo, Inc., a construction company specializing in architectural concrete. He obtained his high school diploma with honors and attended college at the University of Hartford. His reputation as an expert in architectural concrete led a doctor to request that he build a 20-foot-by-40-foot swimming pool in 1955 for the price of $10,000, and Rizzo began constructing his first pool. Later, as a sub-contractor to a pool company, Rizzo managed the construction of about 10 pools, then bought out the pool business and absorbed it into his construction company. In the late 1950s, Rizzo formed a separate pool division, Rizzo Pool Company, which over the years has become a full-service pool construction company with sales, design, in-house construction and retail – growing into a milliondollar organization with more than 35 employees and two outlets. The company now focuses on high-end residential and commercial pool and waterscape projects.
