APSP Quarterly - Spring 2008 - (Page 39) safety department Priority #1 = Safety! What Can You Do? B Y H E L E N B LO C H A P S P M A N AG E R O F C O N S U M E R S A F E T Y AFTER A LOT of hard work and support at all levels of APSP, the Pool & Spa Safety Act has finally passed in Congress. Now what? What does that mean to you? To the retailer? The builder? The service company? The manufacturer? How does it impact you in your business? More importantly, how can we, as APSP members, impact pool, spa and hot tub owners so that all the time and effort we put into getting this law passed has the results we want – preventing accidents and saving lives? A s A PSP members who va lue safet y, it ’s ou r job to educate consumers so that our products and beautiful backyard env ironments are enjoyed for many years by our customers. It’s good for the customer and good for your business. It saves lives and sends the message, “If you want a pool, spa, or hot tub, be sure you go to a professional, an APSP member.” How can you help? There are a number of ways APSP members can get the word out about safety products and safety rules to follow with pools, spas, and hot tubs. APSP and the International Code Council Partner: You Can Get Involved! One really big opport unit y is t he par t nersh ip A PSP has established with the International Code Council for their Building Safety Week, May 5-11, 2008. As a part of our alliance, we’ve collaborated on a new brochure on pool and spa safety, incorporating t he i mp or t a nt e le m e nt s of ANSI/APSP-7 (included in the Pool & Spa Safety Act), which will be co-branded with both the APSP and ICC logos. The brochure will be part of a packet of safety materials sent to more than 47,000 ICC members and building inspectors across the U.S. To enhance this partnership and get involved in the safety effort, call your local ICC chapter and plan a pool and spa safety day in your community. Why not hold it at an APSP member retail store? Brochures can be ordered from APSP at a very nominal cost and distributed free to all who attend. Add a Water Watcher tag and maybe even an inexpensive trinket (a keychain?) with your logo and a phrase such as, “Adult supervision – the key to pool and spa safety.” A display of safety products such as drain covers and others listed in our “Layers of Protection” brochure such as locks for doors, gates and pools and pool and spa covers, would be valuable for consumers to see and would be even more meaningful if you and your staff explain the benefits. A PSP members are t he professionals consumers rely on to build and install safe pools, Here are a few more suggest ions for gett ing involved in promoting the essence of the Pool & Spa Safety Act and ANSI/APSP-7: • Include safety brochures with packets you give to homeowners who purchase your products and services. • Create a “safety corner” in your retail store, displaying the APSP, TV public service DVD*, offering free brochures and water-watcher tags, and showing an array of safety products with short explanations for each. • Participate in a local community fair by having a booth promoting pool, spa and hot tub safety, along with the health and social benefits of owning these products. • Contact your local TV and radio stations and ask them to run APSP public service announcements. • Partner with your local community hospital to sponsor a pool and spa safety day. spas, and hot tubs and to teach them how to use products safely. We a l l k now t he wonder f u l healt h benef it s a nd pleasu re consumers enjoy when owning pools, spas, and hot tubs. Let’s make it a priority to be sure they understand how to enjoy many years of fun and satisfaction by having t he proper safeg uards and layers of protection. Safety is pr ior it y #1! Let’s be su re consumers k now t hey should hire an A PSP professional to get the job done right. Use your imagination and get involved!
