APSP Quarterly - Spring 2008 - (Page 40) APSP news & resources APSP-Supported Pool & Spa Safety Act Becomes Law In December 2007, Congress approved and President Bush signed into law the “Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act” as Title XIV of H.R. 6, the omnibus energy bill. An analysis of the provisions that address entrapment prevention and protective barriers around pools, spas, and hot tubs is available on the APSP website (APSP.org) or by clicking through Industry/Government Relations/Issues in Legislation. In January, APSP met with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the lead agency in administering the state grants provided by the act. 2008 APSP Board of Directors Announced; Gene Fields Begins Term as APSP Chairman APSP has announced the 2008 officers of its national board of directors: Gene Fields, chairman of the board; Penny Johnson, i m med iate past cha i r ma n; Terr y Brown, chairman-elect; and Charlie Schobel, secretary/ treasurer. RWQ Standard Completes First ANSI Ballot A PSP completed t he f irst A NSI ballot in December for the new draft standard APSP-11 Recreational Water Quality. After the A PSP Recreational Water Quality Committee reviews the ballots and comments, APSP will conduct a second (recirculation) b a l lo t . Ty p i c a l l y a f t e r t he second A NSI ballot, A PSP’s draft standards have achieved consensus in accordance with the numerical requirements of APSP’s A NSI- approve d pro c e du re s . The draft standard will then be submitted to ANSI for approval and publication as an American National Standard. they need. Both sites offer keyword-driven and category-specific searching, eliminating the clutter of a general Internet search. Board of Regents Appointed for APSP Career Institute APSP Chairman Gene Fields announced the members of the new Board of Regents for the APSP Career Institute. The regents held their fi rst conference call in January 2008. ANSI/APSP-7 Suction Entrapment Standard Takes Effect in Florida this Year An important change in the new Florida Building Code occurred last summer with the adoption of ANSI/APSP-7, American National Standard for Suction Entrapment Avoidance in Swimming Pools, Wading Pools, Spas, Hot Tubs, and Catch Basins. The new code is effective October 1, 2008. The Florida Swimming Pool Association (FSPA) will be publicizing reminders about the upcoming changes prior to the 2008 effective date. FSPA is also developing a continuing education class on this standard and is working with building officials to educate their departments and consumers. The next indust r y meeting is scheduled for March 26 in Alexandria, VA. At the March APSP Launches Internet Search Tools for Industry and Consumers Last fall APSP launched the second edition of its Pool & Spa Industry Search and the new Consumer Pool & Spa Industry Search.
