As we write this article, Hawaii is contemplating deregulating cosmetology and barbering licensing! Now, you may be thinking the legislature in my state would never allow this, and we’re sure that’s what the cosmetology schools and salons were thinking when a bill came along that would put cosmetology, barbering and other licensing regulations under another board. Unfortunately, when the bill was drafted, cosmetology and barbering were left out and in effect, deregulating everything we work so hard for every day. Do they think that we put a bowl on our student’s heads and tell them to cut around it? We teach them anatomy, physiology, chemistry, customer service and what it takes to build a successful business the day they graduate. So the next time you think it can’t happen to you, think about the aloha state. Your state relations team is hard at work behind the scenes trying to protect you and everything you work so hard for.
… 85 PERCENT OF THE MEMBERS OF CONGRESS AND A GROWING PORTION OF STATE LEGISLATORS USE WEB FORMS INSTEAD OF EMAIL TO RECEIVE CONSTITUENT COMMUNICATIONS.

State relations has been really busy so far this year; we have 10 zones across the country with over 67 committee members who work really hard to keep us up to date on legislative activities. Every month all the committee members report back to us regarding any activity that has occurred within their state. Another means of communication is the state listserve, which provides committee members access to the guidance of everyone in the state relations committee should the need arise. Another great service is that the state listserve is archived so that we may use this valuable information as a resource for years to come. State relations has the use of Capwiz as a tool to combat harmful legislation or push a bill that may benefit your state. You may have seen this tool used by government relations many times in the past. This is such an important part of state relations because we know that 85 percent of the members of Congress and a growing portion of state legislators use Web forms instead of e-mail to receive constituent communications. Capwiz, the award-winning online advocacy solution, which Great Clips sponsors for AACS, is designed to cultivate grassroots mobilization by helping constituents identify and communicate with their legislators or committee members on important issues when it counts the most. Capwiz consults with Congressional offices and the Congressional Management Foundation (CMF) to offer authentication and Web form compliance for our organization’s messages to move past these barriers. Capwiz helps 1,700 large and small associations, nonprofits, businesses, media portals and other organizations achieve legislative success by influencing state and federal policymakers, managing online fundraising, getting out the vote and much more! With more than 25 million constituent messages delivered to elected officials in 2009, there is no better tool for AACS to use when we need it. Please remember, if you face a legislative issue in your state, that you are not alone and state relations is just a phone call away.
