Milan Institute of Cosmetology Raises Funds for Haiti
A Pioneer Is Lost
Beauty industry pioneer Benedict (Ben) Gripaldi passed away on March 5, 2010. Gripaldi was 89 years old, and resided in New Jersey at the time of his death. Gripaldi was the owner and operator of the Park Beauty School for 25 years, served as the president of the National Association of Cosmetology Schools from 1962–1964, and served as the executive director of (NACS) from 1964–1984. It was during his administration that NACS appeared in front of the Department of Education and won the battle to make beauty schools eligible for student loans. In addition to his service in the industry, he also served with the United States Army Air Corp in World War II, obtaining the rank staff sergeant.
Milan Institute of Cosmetology hosted an ‘Open Your Hearts to Haiti’ fundraiser back in February, which benefited the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund. All revenue from the student salon and spa services went to the fund. “When we opened the door there were 10 people waiting,” said Jill Wells, the Fairfield location director. Milan has 18 schools in four states (Texas, California, Idaho and Nevada), and the goal for the fundraiser was $10,000 for all schools. Together they raised nearly $20,000 for Haiti.

Clary Sage College, branch campus of Community Care College, was invited to facilitate the hair, makeup, nails and massage services for the national hit reality show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. The students, staff and faculty all contributed on set for five full days, mostly performing services, but some had the opportunity to help with building work as well. They even had the opportunity to meet some of the stars including Ty Pennington, Paul DiMeo, Paige Hennis, Eduardo Xol, and special guests Miranda Lambert and Sheryl Crow. “It is wonderful to show off our students’ abilities as well as to show our appreciation to the workers and producers. Making one family’s dream come to a reality makes it very rewarding to all. We are thrilled to be a part of this award-winning show and honored that we can help to relax or beautify those that are working so hard for such a great cause,” said Christen Brummett, campus director for Clary Sage College.
