a highly successful AACS Spring Management Conference, the AACS Government Relations Team (GRT) wanted to provide you with a quick review of both our current, on-going initiatives on behalf of students, an update on the outcome of Federal Negotiated Rulemaking on student loan issues taking place over the first quarter of the year, and our always fluid and continuous preparation for the future.
Imminent Legislative Threats to Students—and Possibly Institutions
Without Congressional intervention, a little over a month from receipt of this edition of BeautyLink, access to postsecondary education for some students and the cost of higher education for all student loan borrowers is at risk.
As highlighted at the AACS Spring Management Conference, AACS and the newly introduced AACS MemberLink contain two specific initiatives (Protect Students’ Interest and Preserve ATB Student Access) designed to prevent the elimination of ATB student eligibility and a doubling of student loan interest rates on July 1, 2012. If you are not already actively involved in supporting these important initiatives, please go to AACS MemberLink immediately, sign up to be a part of the GRT groups providing the most up-todate information on the status of these key legislative proposals, and support the efforts of the GRT. With a little over a month left, there is much at stake! It is likely that any legislation that comes forward to address these issues may also have other proposals linked to the “must pass” legislation. It
