s Cosmetology school owners and educators, you have a tremendous influence on the future of the beauty industry. New beauty professionals commonly face challenges with learning business skills to augment their technical training. By continuing their education with business seminars, webinars or a coaching series, they can kick start their careers right from the beginning. Gary Ahlquist is a business coach specializing in the professional beauty industry. Ahlquist works with thousands of beauty professionals each year, helping them to build clientele, increase service and retail profits and to create a work/life balance. “The single biggest challenge for cosmetology students today is to make the transition from school to the real world. Your obligation as leaders is to groom your students for a career, not just a job or to pass their licensure exams. Consider what you can do within your curriculum to round out the education and provide business skills for your students,” Ahlquist said. There are many ways that you can augment the traditional cosmetology fare with some essential business knowledge that no student should leave cosmetology school without learning.
“Conversely, there is a huge drop-off rate in the first two years of a beauty professional’s career, with many choosing to change professions because they don’t earn enough money. Students should be encouraged to create a simple business plan, to provide them with tangible goals for what they need to earn to make a living,” Ahlquist said. Students should figure out the type of hours they expect to work, the amount of time off they would like, and the salary they would ideally like to earn. They should be encouraged to dream big— the danger is not dreaming too big, but
